The definition for transfaunation is a symbiotic fauna (usually mutualistic protozoa) transfer from one host to another. In English, it means you are swapping alpaca spit from a healthy alpaca into a sick alpaca.
You're probably wondering why would you ever do this?
Well, if you have an alpaca that is not eating, its absolutely critical to keep your alpacas rumen (ie digestive system) working. Alpacas are very stoic animals and it won't take long without adequate
nourishment for them to quickly deteriorate. Before doing this, or any other treatment, you would want to consult your vet.
Ok, your next question is probably how would you do this?
For this, you will need your most ill-tempered alpaca. Once you have the alpaca haltered, put a sock over their mouth. With a little luck, they will spit up a storm fairly quickly. Put the sock into a bowl and add about 50% water. The water should be around 100 degrees. Once the rumen has soaked, syringe feed or, if necessary, tube feed the rumen juice to your alpaca. Because the good bacteria die off, you will want to use fresh spit everytime. The recommended dosage is 5 cc spit, 5 cc water mixed 2x a day for one week.
There is no doubt that this is a smelly stinky job. However, it just might save your alpaca.
