Have you ever wondered why the God of the universe would decide that the only way he could save mankind was to send his son, Jesus, to die on the cross? Well, I have. Try to wrap your mind around that. God knows that we are fallen sinners, he knows that we will turn our backs on him in a heartbeat and yet, he is willing to send his son in human form to live with us and to die for us.
Why? Couldn't he have just been pleased with burnt animal sacrifices? I, mean, these were sacrifices done to please Him right? I've pondered on this for years.
Recently, I've had an opportunity to take a deep dive into Revelations. That is finally where I've started to see the answers I've sought.
To understand this, one must read the Bible. (and have the benefit of many theologists interpretations).
To set the scene:
First we have God, the Holy Spirit and Jesus all part of the trinity. They are surrounded by angels. Satan is one of the greatest of all angels. He is beautiful beyond all measure. Because of this, he is filled with Pride. He decides that he should be on equal footing with God. Talk about gall!
Anyway, behind God's back, Satan is recruiting angels with the come follow me promise and I will give you the world. Well, God learns of this and is none too happy. After all, he did create Satan.
Remember a time when you were little and did something wrong. Your very body trembled when you heard your father say "Come in here son I want to talk to you". It rarely ever held a good outcome for you.
So God calls Satan in before his throne. "So Satan, I've heard you've been a busy boy". Satan being the best liar to date looks with with shock upon God and says "No, God not me." Around and around they go. God accusing, Satan denying.
God decides that its time that Satan moved on. So he kicks Satan and his angel followers out BUT, like any good Father, he leaves the door open for Satan to come back and stand before his throne. Satan, having nowhere else to go, comes to earth and begins to wreak havoc. Satan uses every opportunity to go back before the throne of God and condemn us. He's the epitome of a tattletale.
God soon tires of Satan always telling on his people. Remember, he has eyes and ears. He knows full well what we are up to. He also can see the writing on the wall. Satan is going to use every angle in the book to gain the throne.
Unlike you and me that have no clue what tomorrow will bring, God does. He realizes that at some point he is going to have to have a face-off with Satan. It may not be today, it may not be tomorrow but sometime in the thousands of years to come, Satan is going to have to go permanently.
So, God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit devise a plan. First, they will need a Messiah to save people and to do incredible miracles. This person will also have to leave the world in such a way that it will be talked about for all of time. This person will have to die an ultimate death and yet death won't be able to hold him. He will rise up and lead an army of angels into the final battle over good and evil. I don't know if they voted or what but Jesus got the assignment. Lastly, they knew that they would need to have someone indwell in God's people so that they might know right from wrong. The Holy Spirit stepped forth to take the challenge.
So the stage is now set for the biggest fight of all time. Satan will be defeated and apparently everyone has read the book except him. Anyway, Jesus will lead the charge and the Children of God will follow on horses behind him. He will do all the fighting, we're just there for the winning celebration!
So that's my explanation of why Jesus had to die. What's yours?
